Shadow refers to those parts of us that we find unacceptable, hide from the world and keep out of self-awareness so that we can feel good about ourselves. Those hidden qualities, however, appear as if out of nowhere and manifest in a range of behaviours that are unacceptable to us and others.
Everyone on the spiritual path has to confront the shadow in one form or another. The shadow of the sacred, or the dark side of those who live a spiritual life, demands to be brought into the light of awareness. We will see then that we are not only afraid of the darkness but also of the light that shines within us. And our fear limits who we may be.
Spiritual renewal begins by pushing back the shadow, the boundaries of unawareness. As we befriend our shadows, we will see how the inner space of conflicts, crises can become a sacred sanctuary.
