Mindfulness Meditation: BRINGING DYING INTO OUR LIVING
Of all footprints
That of the elephant is supreme;
Of all mindfulness meditations,
That on death is supreme..
(Buddha, shortly before his death)
Those who are fearful maintain a distance from death only to be given a crash course in the end. Those who are free, or wish to be, approach death with increasing fearlessness and freedom. Awareness makes that possible.
A genuine awareness of death is life-transforming. Approached mindfully and shorn of morbid ideas, dying, instead of causing fear and panic, helps us befriend and live with it. We begin to make dying a part of our living. When we learn to befriend it, we become fearless in the face of death and all the many endings in our lives.
